GlideWear Prosthetic Liner Patch Frequently Asked Questions - Tamarack Habilitation Technologies, Inc.

The prosthetist-recommended GlideWear Prosthetic Liner Patch is widely used by amputees worldwide. GlideWear is a patented, ultra low friction fabric technology. If you are experiencing friction/shear-induced pain, redness, soreness, or rubbing on your residual limb then the Liner Patch can be used in conjunction with your prosthetic liner.

If you have questions about how to use the Prosthetic Liner Patch, or whether it’s right for you, you’ve come to the right place.

How do GlideWear Prosthetic Liner Patches work?

GlideWear is a unique dual layer, low friction fabric designed to transfer the forces of friction and shear away from at-risk tissues, and into the layers of fabric, thus providing targeted relief and long-lasting protection from skin breakdown. You put the patch over a sore spot on your residual limb, then don your liner and limb as you usually do. See the image below for examples of where people use the Prosthetic Liner Patch.

How long do GlideWear Prosthetic Liner Patches last?

A long time. GlideWear has been wear-tested to 180,000 rub cycles in bench testing and 100 washing and drying cycles with no reduction in effectiveness. Prevent contact with hook & loop straps (Velcro® or similar) to prevent snagging.

How should I wash my GlideWear Prosthetic Liner Patch?

GlideWear can be machine or hand washed and dried, as desired. GlideWear has been wash and wear-tested under high temperature conditions and frequent wash cycles to ensure long-term durability.

Can my patches be sterilized?

Yes, GlideWear Prosthetic Liner Patches can be sterilized in an autoclave, if desired. However, GlideWear does not come sterilized.

Are GlideWear Prosthetic Liner Patches available in multiple sizes?

Yes, GlideWear Prosthetic Liner Patches are available in three sizes: small (2.5 in. x 4.75 in.), large(4.5 in. x 7.5 in.), and circles (4 in. diameter). For most people, the small patches and circles are sufficient. However, for larger limbs and areas of concern, the large patch might work better.

How thick are the patches?

GlideWear Prosthetic Liner Patches are approximately 0.035 in. thick, overall, and 0.045 in. at the seam (sewn around the perimeter), which is slightly thicker than a credit card.

Does GlideWear Contain Latex?

No, GlideWear contains no latex or other known irritants.

Can I use my patches on open wounds?

We recommend using an appropriate wound dressing over open wounds to protect against infection. Consult your primary caregiver for wound dressing recommendations. We recommend placing a GlideWear patch on top of the wound dressing to provide relief and comfort and prevent further skin breakdown while any existing wounds are healing.

Will the patch slide around?

When properly positioned, your prosthetic liner should hold the GlideWear patch firmly in place all day long. The fabric is engineered to slide against itself as motion occurs within and between the bone structure, skin, and prosthetic device, preventing migration during use.

Will the seams cause skin irritation?

No, the sewn seam around the perimeter of the patch has not been shown to cause any irritation among users. However, if you do notice any redness or irritation associated with the seams or patch itself, discontinue use and contact your healthcare provider.

Can I use GlideWear in non-prosthesis applications?

Yes, Tamarack manufactures a variety of products for amputees, wheelchair users, and individuals under extended bed-stay who are at risk of developing bedsores (aka pressure ulcers), blisters, and calluses associated with their use of prosthetic devices, foot braces, wheelchairs, beds, and more.
